Augusta announces results of 2016 government-wide financial audit

AUGUSTA, Ga. – An independent audit of the city of Augusta’s 2016 financial operations has resulted in a clean report. The audit, performed by Mauldin & Jenkins Certified Public Accountants, gives the city an “unqualified opinion.”

“We are pleased the auditors once again reached this conclusion after closely examining our financial operations,” said Augusta Administrator Janice Allen Jackson. “They were able to compare the information they reviewed and determined that it was presented and reported in an acceptable manner, noting that there were no irregularities.”

Mauldin & Jenkins also audited Augusta’s 2015 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), which received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Governmental Finance Officers Association. The award is the highest form of recognition in the field of government accounting and financial reporting.

Miller Edwards, a partner with the Mauldin & Jenkins CPA firm, made the presentation at today’s meeting of the Augusta Commission.

The report details operational results for the county as a whole and by individual funds. The General Fund reported an increase of $3.4 million. The increase was the result of a programmed increase of $1.125 million to replenish funds used in the 2014 ice storm and receipt of $2.1 in reimbursements from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the 2014 ice storm.
